What is the Conrad Challenge?
The Conrad Challenge was founded by Nancy Conrad in honor of her late husband, astronaut, innovator, and entrepreneur, Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr. The Conrad Challenge is an annual, multi-phase innovation and entrepreneurial competition that brings together a dynamic community of innovators and entrepreneurs driving a collaborative movement to develop extraordinary and viable solutions to benefit our world in one of four areas: Aerospace & Aviation, Cyber Technology & Security, Energy & Environment, and Health & Nutrition.
This year’s Conrad Challenge will be unlike ever before. We’ve reimagined the Challenge phases and submission materials by drawing inspiration from the latest trends in the innovation ecosystem, such as lean startup and design thinking. We’ve generated a whole new innovator resource library, infused with the latest practices shared with us by startup industry experts and Conrad alumni alike. With Conrad as your launchpad, we can’t wait to see the incredible entrepreneurial journey you will embark on!
Conrad Foundation Legacy
Established in 2008, the Conrad Foundation honors the legacy of Apollo 12 astronaut, Charles “Pete” Conrad, and his four-decade passion for innovation and entrepreneurship.
During his teen years, Pete struggled academically. At that time, dyslexia was not typically recognized or fully understood. But, a perceptive headmaster saw Pete’s spark of genius and gave him the confidence he needed. Pete went on to earn a scholarship to Princeton University and a ride to the Moon as commander of Apollo 12. In November 1969, he became the third man to walk on the Moon.
After many years as an aerospace explorer, Pete’s entrepreneurial spirit took flight. He founded four companies devoted to the commercialization of space travel.
Unfortunately, Pete’s pursuits were cut short with his passing in 1999. However, his legacy, discussed in more detail in his official NASA biography, continues through the Conrad Foundation.
The Conrad Challenge Nigeria presents a very unique opportunity for the most innovative young minds in the country to collaborate, brainstorm and come up with STEM-enabled innovations/inventions with market potential in any of the four categories available in the challenge.
This challenge provides the perfect platform for the next generation of geniuses and innovators to be discovered. By encouraging entrepreneurship founded on innovations using STEM, we are changing the future of Nigeria a bunch of kids at a time.
